In Whose Image?
"Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto God that which is God's." This is one of the most well-known sayings of Jesus, agreed to be authentic, even by liberal scholars. But what does it really mean? To understand fully the intent and force of Jesus' statement, one must carefully consider the historical setting in Jerusalem, as well as Jesus' rabbinic manner of teaching. In that light, these words of Jesus are not as they usually seem: namely, some kind of guideline for balancing worldly concerns and spiritual responsibilities, or respecting the right of both state and church. The truth is far more radical and revealing, and the key is to be found in Jesus' question, "In whose image....?".
